Thomas "Tommie" Nance
Thomas D. Nance, 75, passed away July 7, 2015 at his home in Stillwater, Oklahoma. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 16th at the Strode Funeral Home Chapel, Stillwater. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Tommie was born on November 6, 1939 in Goodnight, Oklahoma to Marvin Nance and Viola (Creager) Nance-Barnett. He graduated from Stillwater High School. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Army and ended up in Germany where he met Rosemarie Zimmerman. They were married on April 11, 1961 in Basle, Switzerland and were together for 54 years.
When they returned to Stillwater, he enrolled at Oklahoma State University and worked for IGA. In 1965, he went to work for the Stillwater Fire Department and remained with the department for over 20 years.
In his spare time, he helped his dad build homes. After his dad’s death, he helped his niece show horses in the 4-H club. They then went on to show in registered Paint Horse clubs where they did well. He continued to help for 15 years, picking up three more kids and their horses along the way.
During this time, he joined the Moose and Elks Lodges and started the Blazathon BBQ Cook-Off with two other Elks. In between all this, Tom bought an old tractor, for which he needed a dry place to work. He talked to Clagg’s Tractors and ended up working part-time until his health failed.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Viola; step-dad, Forrest Barnett; sisters, Norma (Fred) Wickstrom and Virginia (Robert) Nickelson; and brother-in-law, Neil Griggs.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie; sister, Neva Griggs; nephew, Steven Griggs and niece Cindy Wickstrom.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Tom’s name to the Stillwater Elks Lodge (BPOE 1859), 202 E. McElroy Rd, Stillwater, OK 74075.
