Before her death, Thelma wrote the story of her life. I was born August 8, 1919 to Lester Lee Davis and Mary Etta Coon Davis near Perry, Oklahoma. I was the oldest of six children. I went to grade school at Clarkson and Pleasant Valley District 3, and graduated from Coyle High School in 1936 at the age of 16. I loved to read and my mother taught me at a young age to sew. I wore out my grandmother’s treadle sewing machine as a child.
As a child I remember looking through the cracks in the floorboards of the lumber wagon and watching the water in the river. We were older before we owned a car and only traveled when necessary. Coyle Grocery was the closest so daddy bought our groceries there. Mother seldom went to town.
I married Leonard Lowe on October 26, 1939. We lived on the Reningar place and later bought the property. In 1949, Leonard, with the help of my dad, built our house on the farm using hand tools. In 1950, electricity came to our farm. Leonard passed away in 2003. We have lived together for over 64 years.
As a young homemaker, I joined the Payne Center Extension Club and enjoyed it for as long as I was able, eventually earning the 50 year award. At a middle age, I learned to oil paint and painted for many years for family and friends. I raised a garden for years. I planted the staples and raised strawberries and rhubarb for years until we quit gardening. After Leonard’s death in 2003, I lived alone for several years. I spent my time piecing and hand-quilting quilts for five of my grandchildren.
After the doctor put stints in my arteries to my heart, I moved in with Bob and Pat. During the time I lived with them, Pat cut the pieces and I pieced and bound quilts while Pat machine quilted. I made quilts for five grandchildren and most of my great and great-great grandchildren.
God give me strength. I will go when he calls me. All must be ready when he does. I have loved seeing all of my new grandkids grow up and never dreamed that I would. God bless each of us. I love you all.-Thelma Lowe.
