Barney Lee Turnham, 50, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017, after a courageous eighteen year battle with a degenerative bone and joint disease. A funeral service is planned for 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2017, at The Old Church located in the Territorial Plaza in Perkins, Okla. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Barney was born to William Wiley “Barney” Turnham and Evelyn Maxine (Lacy) Turnham on August 28, 1966. He graduated from Enid High School where he excelled in the sport of baseball. After graduation Barney served thirteen years in the National Guard and an additional three years of active duty in the U.S. Army while stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. It was there he married Kimberly Kay Klinger on July 25, 1997. In 2001, Barney & Kim moved to Perkins, OK. Barney earned a well-deserved reputation for scented candle making. He and Kim traveled the state selling candles at craft shows. They ultimately opened Dream Scents, a candle and gift shop in Perkins where Barney solidified his reputation for his wide selection of scented handmade candles. His illness forced his retirement from the craft in 2014.
Barney never met a stranger. He was a generous man with his time, humor and his love for others. He had 2 favorite pastimes; one was fishing. He and his son, Tyler, enjoyed many fishing trips together. The most memorable one was in 2016 when they went deep sea fishing in St. Augustine, FL. and brought home trophy catches. His other love was binge movie and ice cream time with his daughter, Cheyenne. Kim would often come home to find the two of them had taken over the TV with no end in sight. Barney loved a manicured yard and took great pride in his yard. But above all else he loved playing his guitar. His neighbors can attest to the fact that he preferred playing in the middle of the night. He was a huge animal lover; he dearly loved his cats and they dearly loved him!
Barney is survived by his mother Evelyn Maxine; his wife Kim, of the home; his daughter Cheyenne Nicole, a freshman at Northern Oklahoma College; his son Tyler, a junior at Perkins-Tryon High School; son Dakota Turnham; sister Teresa Lowe and her husband Randy. He is also survived by three older sisters, several nieces, nephews and relatives.
Pallbearers for his service will be Tyler Turnham, Mark Klinger, Dave Lloyd, Chris Harms, Brad Campbell, and Paul Kuepers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dana Bromley and Daniel Quintero.
Contributions can be made in Barney’s name to Tiny Paws Kitten Rescue, 901 S Lowry, Stillwater, OK. 74074 or to the animal charity of your choice.
