Obituary for Bobby West

Bobby West
Bobby Gene West passed away at his home in Stillwater, OK on Thursday, August 24, 2017. His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 28, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church in Stillwater, OK. Internment to follow at the Flynn Cemetery in Cushing, OK.

Bob was born on October 6, 1939 to Aubra and Eula (Plunkett) West at the family home in Cushing, OK. Bob grew up in Cushing where he attended school. He began his education at Independence School and continued onto Sunnyside Elementary. As a youngster, Bob developed his ornery sense of humor and delighted in teasing his sisters. He often got into mischief of one kind or another. At age 9, he contracted polio and spent time in an iron lung. He endured several surgeries on his feet and legs. He wore leg braces for a time, using crutches for support.

Bob trusted Jesus as his personal Savior when he was 12 years old at the Church of God in Cushing, OK. He did some preaching at revivals and even considered becoming a pastor. As a teenager, he worked with his dad bailing hay and building houses. He was active in speech and debate and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was involved with student council and served as president his senior year. He graduated from Cushing High School in 1957. He attended Oklahoma State University receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Speech in 1961. He pursued a Master’s degree in speech from Oklahoma University. Bob then moved to Goodwell, OK to teach at Panhandle A&M College for 2 years.

Panhandle A&M is where the love of his life, Arvilla Mae Fliginger. They were married on June 12, 1966 in Pittsburg, KS. They were blessed with 51 wonderful years filled with love, laughter and lots of fun. They had 2 daughters, 2 grandchildren and enjoyed many precious memories together. Bob gave Arvilla tender-loving care and anticipated her every need.

Bob followed in the footsteps of his dad and granddad, West, and became a homebuilder. He built and sold homes in Stillwater for years until he launched his own business, Top Value Mobile Homes, which continues to successfully operate today.

Bob loved his “baby” kitty, Tinkerbell, who was his faithful friend. He loved his backyard birds and overfed squirrels. He loved the land and being out in nature. He grew a variety of flowers and many good foods in the garden. He loved putting his inventive mind to work, often finding solutions to problems when others had given up. He loved learning and current events, always willing to give his analytical opinion on subjects of interest. Bob loved early mornings and Aldi’s on Sunday afternoons. He loved a good bargain and using his keen business sense. He loved Liberty overalls and plaid flannel shirts. Bob loved the color green and crackin’ pecans. He loved hamburgers with onions and strawberry ice-cream. He loved corny jokes and stories from the Readers’ Digest, of which he had a stack that he was saving for retirement. He loved saying that he was going to retire, but never really wanted to. Bob always said, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Our Papa loved well.

Bob is survived by his best friend and wife, Arvilla of the home; two daughters, Susan West Justice and husband Greg Justice and Ericka West, all of Stillwater OK; 2 grandchildren, Camden Gene Justice and Cassidy Morgan Suzanne Justice; two sisters Christene Tidwell and husband Mel of Tyler, TX and Nila Murrow and husband Wayne of Bethany, OK; brother-in-law, Carroll McGinnis. Also, several cousins, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends too numerous to count.

He was preceded in death by his father, Aubra, mother Eula, one brother Kenneth, who gave his life in service for our country, and a sister Eunice McGinnis.

Bob’s life was well-lived and he touched many lives. “Save your fork, for the best is yet to come.”
