Obituary

Curtis Bruce Davis, age 63, finally got his long-awaited wish; to go home to be with Jesus as soon as he could. While he loved his family immensely, he longed for his heavenly home where frustrations and pain would be no more. A celebration of his life will begin at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2024 at Sunnybrook Christian Church. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.

Curtis was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on February 28, 1961, to Robert and Wanda Davis. He lived in the Tulsa/Sand Springs area throughout high school. He grew up being the youngest of four boys. He loved his family and especially his grandma, who lived with them most of his life.

He accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at the age of sixteen in Niagara Falls, Canada thanks to the example and friendship of lifelong friends, Jeff Segner and Diane Childers.

Curtis loved his high school classmates and became fast friends with a group that had stayed together for the past 45 years post high school. On the weekend of his passing, he was due to meet the group to set up for their 45th class reunion.

Curtis attended Oklahoma State University after high school. He was a member of Delta Chi Fraternity where he was the president for several years. His pledge brothers meant the world to him, and they have also stayed in contact over the years. He received his BS in Advertising and Marketing, then he received his certification in Journalism education. He student taught under the wonderful Marjorie Jones at Stillwater High School.

Curtis met his wife, Julie Jefferies Davis, on the OSU cheerleading squad in 1981. They were married in Sand Springs on May 18, 1985, and made their home in Stillwater. After cheering on the OSU cheer squad together, they coached the OSU Spirit Group. Curtis gave 20 years of his life to coaching and coordinating the OSU Spirit Group. He loved his mentor and boss, Dave Martin, and every squad that came to him each year. During this time, Curtis and Julie also worked for many years for the National Cheerleaders Association each summer. Both would go their separate ways to instruct college and high school cheer camps across the country for NCA and come home on the weekends. Curtis was one of twelve founders for the American Cheerleaders Association under the guidance of lifelong friends Lance and Carol Wagers.

He began teaching Journalism at Stillwater High School in 1990 and had plans to return this next year. To say that he adored teaching high school students would be an understatement. He loved giving lectures that were more than curriculum, mostly life lectures. His class ran like a business, and he loved the high energy and busyness in his classroom. Every year, he would say that he loved that group of seniors the best. For finals each year, he would bring in all his neckties and teach the students how to tie them as it was a life skill he felt important. He had great respect for his administration and teaching colleagues and was never afraid to give anyone his opinion.

He was a member of Sunnybrook Christian Church and each Sunday he made a lengthy list on the left side of his bulletin of those he would be praying for that week. His life group was the highlight of his Sunday night and Shelby, Barry, Lynn, Sam, Terri, and Kyle became his treasured confidants.

Curtis was an avid movie goer, attending a Saturday matinee each week. He made a list of movies he attended, the cast of characters, the date, and his rating. At the bottom of that lengthy list, he logged the Saturdays he did not attend a movie and his reason for missing. As of June 8th, 2024, he had seen 824 movies.

In between his coaching and teaching, Curtis and Julie were blessed with precious children, grandchildren, and family.

Curtis is survived by his wife, Julie, of Stillwater, his son, Jefferies Blake Davis (Paula Lee) of Newcastle, OK, daughter, Hadley Elaine Smith (Sawyer), grandsons Louis, Charlie and Teddy Smith of Oronogo, MO, son, Russell Luke Davis (Kirsten) of Tulsa, OK, brother, Tim Davis (Gloria) of Salina, OK, cousin Debbie Rose (Ed) of Collinsville, OK, brother-in-law, Dan Jefferies (Beth) of Trophy Club, TX and sister-in-law, Janet Wilkey of Sand Springs, OK. Also surviving are his nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
