Obituary

David C Hessel passed away peacefully on October 17th, 2026. David lived a meaningful 93 years marked by his loyalty to friends, family, and his community. He was known for by byhis generosity, sense of humor and ability to make friends. He was an active member and served in the First United Methodist Church . He served on the Oklahoma State Foundation Board and as a City Commissioner. Dave married Jo York in 1954 and they lived in Stillwater where he was involved in businesses, property management and insurance; Jo was a school teacher and they raised two girls, Robin and Susan.

Dave was born in Hitchcock OK on January 31, 1933 and grew up on the family farm with his six brothers and sisters. His Mom and Dad, Cora and David were very hard workers and all the kids learned the ethic of hard work which Dave carried throughout his life and career. His greatest admiration was for people who worked hard and he would often extend them a helping hand.

As a boy he excelled in the Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Scout award and he was awarded a scholarship to OSU where he earned a degree in Agriculture Economics. Later in life he applied his experience and education toward his small farm with cattle and a large well equipped tool room. He enjoyed maintaining his home, the farm and rental properties. It was his dream to fly planes and at a young age he became a pilot instructor for the US Air Force and flew a variety of aircraft.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings. He is survived by his two daughters, Robin Hessel Griggs of Stillwater and her husband, Steve Griggs and Susan Elaine Dietz of Austin, Tx. and her husband, Ted Dietz. Also granddaughter Candice Hessel and great granddaughter Grace of Austin, TX. and grandson David Grant Hessel, wife Tara and great granddaughter, Susie of San Marcos, TX.

Dave will be missed by so many who loved him including his friends at The Legacy where he resided his last three years. His life was greatly enriched in his last years by a caring relationship with his special friend Fern Green Bowling.

The family thanks the staff at The Legacy who loved him and cared for him. The care givers and nurses at Legacy enjoyed his humor and were so kind and caring. We also thank his care givers Josh Scott and Heather Jones who assisted him during his most difficult times.

A gathering of friends and family will be held at The Legacy chapel (5601 North Washington Street) on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.. In lieu of flowers the family recommends making a donation in his name to the first United Methodist Church of Stillwater.
