In Loving Memory of

Dennis Ray Hughes Sr.

July 8, 1951 – October 25, 2026

Dennis Ray Hughes Sr., 75, of Ripley, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at home on October 25, 2026, with his family by his side. Dennis was born on July 8, 1951, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, to William Earl and Cleo Jean (Thrasher) Hughes.

A Celebration of Life will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 30, 2026, at the Brenda Ingersol Dale Performing Arts Center, 505 1st Ave, Ripley, Oklahoma 74062.

Dennis graduated from Glenpool High School in 1969. On April 10, 1970, he married the love of his life, Vickie Pendergrass. Together, they shared 56 years of marriage.

Dennis proudly served his country from 1971 to 1973, becoming a military police officer during his service. Throughout his life, he held many jobs, but his true calling was serving others. He became an ordained minister in 1978, sharing his love for Jesus with those around him. He also served for many years as a custodian for Ripley Public Schools, where he treasured the friendships, he formed with teachers and enjoyed being around the students. His commitment to serving his community continued as a police officer with the Ripley Police Department for 21 years, followed by service as a reserve deputy sheriff with the Payne County Sheriff's Office.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife, Vickie; daughter Robin Bartel of Derby, KS and husband Richard Bartel; son Dennis Hughes II of Silver City, OK and wife Stephanie Hughes; and daughter Patsy Matheson of Stillwater, OK.

His nine grandchildren—Randy Bartel, Ashley Bartel, Bailey Coats, Cyle Colwell, Caitlynn David, Ravyn Hughes, Talon Hughes, Gavin Matheson, and Jovie Matheson—and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom were his pride and joy. They brought him immeasurable happiness, and the love he shared with them will remain a treasured part of his legacy.

Dennis also leaves behind his siblings, and countless relatives and friends.

Dennis will be remembered for his servant's heart, love for Jesus, his contagious laugh, and his love for the Oklahoma Sooners. He lived a life of service, faith, and love, leaving behind a legacy that will continue through all the lives he touched.
