Don was one of five children born to Leon and Zelda Davis of Seminole, Oklahoma. Don married Ada-Anne Rhodes in 1973 who remained the love of his life until her death in October 2007.

Don graduated from Ada High School, Class of 1964 and attended Seminole Junior College, East Central, and Okmulgee Technology Institute prior to taking a position at Oklahoma State University as a commercial artist. He left OSU to pursue a career in the printing industry for 10 years before returning to OSU to work at Fire Protection Publications as Production Manager. He retired January 1, 2007.

Concurrent with his job at OSU, Don served as a volunteer for Stillwater Emergency Management (Civil Defense) for over 45 years. His duties included storm spotting, assisting the fire and police departments, and running barricades for games, homecoming and special events including the Oklahoma Special Olympics. Don was a member of the International Fire Service Training Association for 35 years. He received the honor of Emeritus Status awarded by the Executive Board in 2016.

Don had several hobbies over the years. He enjoyed sailing, kayaking, photography, woodworking and target shooting. He had a tremendous love of automobiles and owned several interesting cars and collectibles. Don enjoyed traveling, especially road trips, visiting auto museums and cruising. He was fortunate to travel to many states as well as provinces of Canada and tropical island destinations. Don's musical tastes had almost no boundaries. He enjoyed folk music from the Andes, country, instrumentals-especially hammered dulcimer, some classical, and good old rock and roll.
