Obituary

Doris Ann Lytle Gass, passed away peacefully at the age of 98, Wednesday August 13, 2025 in
Stillwater, OK. Doris was born January 31,1927 in Hominy, OK to Floyd Silvester "Doc" Lytle and Lucille Elizabeth Owens. She grew up in Hominy, OK where she and her older sister, Francis graduated from Hominy High School. In 1945 Doris attended the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha. Doris married Floyd Gass on January 26, 1947 in the First Christian Church of Hominy, when Floyd returned from serving in the Army in Germany. After marrying, the couple moved to Stillwater, OK where Floyd entered Oklahoma A&M to get his degree in education and play basketball and football. Between the years of 1951 and 1954 after Floyd's graduation from Oklahoma A&M the couple embarked on a career of coaching beginning at the high school level. In 1954, an opportunity arose to enter the college coaching ranks by joining good friend and fellow Oklahoma A&M graduate Joe Spencer at Austin College in Sherman, TX. During their 15 years at Austin College, Doris was the "team mother" for the basketball and football teams, preparing Thanksgiving dinner every year for the basketball team. In 1969, Floyd and Doris returned to Stillwater, which had now become Oklahoma State University (OSU) when Floyd became head football coach. Doris was a passionate member of the OSU community and actively supported the school's teams. Doris made her home in Brentwood from 1969 until she passed away Wednesday. Brentwood was the Oklahoma hub of Doris's family with her grandkids often found squealing in the pool and playing hide and seek in the clubhouse. During her time in Stillwater, Doris became a volunteer and employee in the Administration Office at the Stillwater hospital. She worked there for over 20 years and enjoyed her retirement playing bridge, supporting the arts and continuing her Thanksgiving dinners for family.

Doris is survived by 2 sons, Ric and wife Bea, and Dan. 5 grandchildren: Matthew and wife Jennifer, Amy and husband, Ivan; Byrony and husband Eric, Ellen and Ian; and great grandchildren: Lillian, Abigail, Elise, Emmy, Theodore, and Alexander.
