Obituary

Dorothy Allen Turman, "Dot" to her many friends, passed away peacefully at home on February 26 at age 96.

Inurnment will take place at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 15, 2026 at the First United Methodist Church Columbarium. Friends and family are invited to attend. Cremation was handled by Strode Funeral Home and Cremation.

Born on September 13, 1929, in Humboldt, Tennessee to Kitty Mae Hunt Allen and Leroy Allen, Dot grew up in several Oklahoma towns, graduating from Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The following fall she enrolled as a freshman at Oklahoma A & M, where she joined Kappa Delta Sorority. She remained a loyal and active member of the Nu chapter throughout her life, serving a number of roles as an alumna advisor.

That year, she also met the love of her life, E. J. Turman, on a blind date to a university party. They married on January 31, 1949, and remained together for 57 years until E. J.'s death in 2006.

Upon their marriage, they moved to Lafayette, Indiana, where E. J. pursued his graduate studies at Purdue University. Roughly five years later, in 1955, Dot and E. J. returned to Stillwater, where they remained for the rest of their lives.

Dot, an avid gardener with a particularly lovely wildscape garden, was a frequent volunteer at the OSU Botanic Gardens. She also built two aquatic gardens filled with beautiful water lilies and other plant and pond life. The ponds were popular stops on the water garden tours. Dot maintained these gardens herself until she left her home in 2021, at age 91, to move to an apartment at Legacy Village.

Dot was a talented artist in many media, including oil, water color, silk screening, and Raku pottery. Her home was filled with her paintings and pottery as well as many collected treasures. She enjoyed design and loved to vary her decor with the passing seasons.

Of all the seasons, Dot loved Christmas, a highlight of which were her seven Christmas trees. Her favorite was a "mouse tree," covered with felt mice in all manner of costumes and activities, such as a mouse on skies and a mouse lounging in a hammock. These mice were handcrafted over the years by Dot and her sister Robbie Jane. For her last Christmas, Dot had only one Christmas tree, and it was her mouse tree.

Dot was preceded in death by her parents Kittie Mae and Leroy Allen, her husband E. J. Turman, her sister Robbie Jane Mallin (Jim), and her son Charles Allen Turman (Dora). She is survived by her daughter Catherine Turman Wildermuth (David) of Austin, TX and by Sugar, her loyal companion of 10 years.
