Obituary

Frank George Steindl, age 89, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, January 22, 2025. A Rosary Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, January 31st, 2025 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with a reception to follow. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 1st, 2025 at St. Francis Xavier with burial following in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Frank was the son of Frank and Anna (Bumeder) Steindl who emigrated from lower Bavaria in the late-1920s, was born in Chicago on August 26, 1935. His twin sister Betty was born seven minutes and a day earlier. He graduated from St. Alphonsus Elementary School (1949), DePaul Academy (1953) and DePaul University (1957). He received an A.M in Economics from the University of Illinois (1958) and a Ph.D in Economics from the University of Iowa (1963). While there, he also fulfilled his eight-year Naval Reserve obligation, mustering out as a Petty Officer Second Class.
He joined the Economics faculty at Oklahoma State University in 1962 where he progressed to Regents Professor of Economics and Ardmore Professor of Business Administration, retiring in 2004. He published over fifty articles in professional journals along with twenty-five book reviews. He gave over one hundred fifty presentations at university seminars and professional meetings as well as directing twenty-three doctoral dissertations. His two books were Monetary Interpretations of the Great Depression and Understanding Economic Recovery in the 1930s: Endogenous Propagation in the Great Depression.
He served as Economist, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Economist and Counsel, United States Senate, Committee on the Budget, Visiting Professor of Economics University of Munich, Visiting Professor of Economics and Finance, University of Bamberg, Visiting Scholar, Brown University, Academic Visitor, London School of Economics, and Visiting Scholar, University of Iowa. He also taught summers at the Universities of Missouri, Colorado, Wisconsin and Alaska.
He was a Scout Master (Troop 98) and President of the St. Francis Xavier School Board. His interests included Cubs baseball, his 1962 Triumph TR3, wood working, running, and camping and hiking in National Parks with his family.
He married Joyce Becker on his August 26 birthday in 1961. They are the parents of David (Patti), a retired Rear Admiral, Andrew (Cyndee), owner of a plumbing business, Peter (deceased in 2018 at age 51), and Matthew (Katie), a firefighter/paramedic, each of whom is an Eagle Scout. They are also Oma and Opa to six grandchildren, Alayna, Sarah, Andrew, Caitlyn, Casey and Teagan, as well as two great grandchildren, Andrew III and Alex. He is survived by his twin sister Betty.
