Genevieve was born on August 16, 1935, to Clyde and Lela Weatherly in Ryan, Oklahoma, where she lived until the age of 15. At that time, the family relocated to Stillwater to allow their children to one day attend Oklahoma A & M, now OSU. Genevieve would graduate from Stillwater High School and subsequently complete a master's degree and beyond at OSU. While attending SHS, she met and married the love of her life, Terrell Hurst, Jr. on June 20, 1953. In November 1957, she gave birth to their only child, Terrell Hurst, III. Genevieve and "Terry" would enjoy 39 wonderful, loving years together educating children across the country from Oklahoma to Arizona until his sudden passing in 1992.
Upon completing their education at OSU, Genevieve and Terry moved to Kayenta, Arizona, where they would spend the next 17 years on a Navajo reservation as both teachers and administrators. Genevieve came to know and love the Navajo people and was instrumental in developing educational materials that would relate and translate to their culture. Her time in Arizona continued to hold a very special place in her heart beyond her years there. They would later return to Oklahoma to continue their educational endeavors and begin to plan their retirement in Stillwater. Following the unexpected death of her beloved Terry, she renewed her teaching credentials. She was approached by Sunnybrook Christian Church to aid in the development of a new Christian school. She would become administrator of the Sunnybrook Christian School (now known as Stillwater Christian School) where she would remain until her full retirement. In total Genevieve would dedicate more than 43 years to the education and nurturing of children. She truly believed that she could teach any child to read, and she succeeded in doing so!! She was passionate about teaching and felt all children deserved a full, successful educational experience that prepared them for their future intellectually and spiritually. She was commissioned by the National Education Association to travel to China to assist in a reading program exchange. Accolades in regard to her teaching skills continue beyond her years on this earth. She prided herself in teaching and changing the lives of children through education.
Genevieve's love for education was only superseded by her love of God and family. Following Terry's death, she traveled the world from Africa to China to Bulgaria and beyond. She and her sister, Clydel, took annual trips searching and exploring lighthouses across the US. She loved learning and became a Master Gardener because of her love of the outdoors and all of God's beautiful creations.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Lela Weatherly; husband, Terrell Hurst, Jr; sister, Clydel Hobbs Cheatham. She is survived by her son Terrell Hurst, III (Leticia); brother, Wayne (Ann); granddaughter, Christie Ried; grandsons, Braxton and Corbin; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Her presence will be deeply missed by family, friends, and her beloved church community. She leaves a legacy of kindness, perseverance, morality, and intellect with a true love of the Bible.
