Joe was born in Ponca City on September 17, 1955, to Billy Joe and Helen Frances
(Leven) Haney. He lived his earliest years in Norfolk, VA, but spent most of his
childhood and teen years in Bartlesville, graduating from College High School in 1973.
Joe also enjoyed spending many of his summers in Newkirk, OK, at the Leven family
farm, as well as singing at the Catholic church while his mom played the organ on
Sunday mornings.
During his days at Col-Hi, Joe met the love of his life, Pamela Paul. They met during
choir, and he adored Pam from the very start. Joe was loved by Pam's parents, and
Pam enjoyed spending time with Joe's ornery dad.
Joe followed Pam to Oklahoma State University. During his college years, he was active as a trainer for the Oklahoma State football team and especially enjoyed being with the team for the 1974 Fiesta Bowl. Joe and Pam were married on May 22, 1976, and he graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Business Administration in May of 1977. Joe and Pam both worked at Chuck's Paint and Paper at different times and developed a special lifelong relationship with Chuck and Vicki Ketch.
In the fall of 1983, Joe began working at Bates Brothers in downtown Stillwater. After a
few years of mentorship from Sam Bates, Joe and his business partner, Mark Burson,
purchased Bates Bros. The shop focused on well-made, name-brand men's and
women's apparel. Over time, Joe and Mark opened Boston Traders, Bleachers, and
Golf USA, all in downtown Stillwater. Joe was passionate about small business and served as President of Main Street in the late 1980s.
After a fulfilling career in retail, Joe began working at BancFirst in May of 1993. He
loved helping people and building relationships to better support his community.
His love of Stillwater was evident in the many ways he served. He was a City
Commissioner in the early 1990s, served as Chamber of Commerce Chair, and spent
five years on the Stillwater School Board. He also co-chaired the committee that
successfully passed the use tax to expand Gallagher-Iba, served on the BancFirst
Board of Directors, chaired and assisted with Junior PGA and Karsten Creek golf
tournaments, and served on the OSU Alumni Association Board as well as Stillwater
Medical Center Board of Trustees. He loved both Catholic parishes in Stillwater and
helped by singing in the choir, giving tours and sharing information as an ambassador
for the new St. Francis Church and acting as a member of the Finance Council. He also
loved and completed Leadership Stillwater and Leadership Oklahoma.
Later in his career, Joe transitioned to fundraising for the Oklahoma State University
Foundation, where his greatest accomplishment was cultivating the gift that named the
Spears School of Business. He also worked for the Bartlesville Community Foundation
and finished his career working for Epworth Villa, helping lay the foundation for Legacy
Village of Stillwater. In the midst of a successful career and dedicated community service, Joe was an amazing father to Chad, Ryan, and Joy. He proudly sang the national anthem alongside Chad at Gallagher-Iba and loved singing with him in church. He loved cheering on Ryan in all his sports and watching him mow endless yards. He proudly took Joy to visit Washington, DC, and on many other trips. He always encouraged his children to pursue their passions and did everything he could to help them achieve their goals and dreams.
As his children married and had children of their own, Joe took on his favorite role in life: being Joepa. He loved watching Chad's boys, Crayton and Carter, sing and perform and loved traveling with them. He never missed an opportunity to watch Ryan's boys, Wyatt and Colton, play baseball, often livestreamed on GameChanger. He loved picking up Joy's girls, Caris and Marin, from school and getting ice cream with them every chance he could. He was endlessly proud of all six grandchildren and loved hearing their voices and stories. He was such a beloved Joepa.
Finally, Joe loved spending time with his wife, Pam, going on trips, singing in the church
choir, mowing, and spending many years making stained glass pieces and cleaning and
organizing his barn. Joe loved giving gifts and never missed an opportunity to make
sure Pam had pretty flowers, Godiva chocolate, and Mary Engelbreit calendars. When
Pam and the grandkids watched the movie Up, he surprised them by filling Pam's car
with balloons for when they exited the movie theater. He was always fun and loved to
make others happy. His generosity was unmatched and felt in pianos, land gifts,
529-Ds, shopping trips, and excursions to so many different places.
Joe will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife of nearly 50 years, Pam;
his children, Chad (Jillian), Ryan (Amy), and Joy (Chad Cawood); and his six cherished
grandchildren, Crayton and Carter Haney, Wyatt and Colton Haney, and Caris and
Marin Cawood. He is also survived by his sister, Jan Snow; his brother, Paul Haney;
and many loved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests donations be made in Joe's name to the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church stained glass window project, 711 N. Country Club, Stillwater, Oklahoma 74075.
