Obituary

Joy Beatrice Hughes, 95, of Perkins, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2026. She was born on July 10, 1931, in Blanchard, Oklahoma, to John Herman Corley and Lucille Estelle Groves.

Joy attended Middleberg High School and dedicated much of her working life to caring for others through her work in the healthcare field. She worked as a central sterilization technician at a hospital in Muskogee, and also worked for the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City and Southwest Medical in Liberal, Kansas. Through the years, her work reflected her commitment to serving others and helping those around her.

On August 22, 1953, Joy married Bernie “Pete” Hughes. They shared many years together until his passing in 1985.

Joy was a longtime member of Perkins First Baptist Church, where her Christian faith was an important part of her life. She also found great joy in the simple things she loved. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and gardening.

Family was especially important to Joy, and her legacy will live on through the many generations of family she leaves behind. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend whose life touched many people throughout her 95 years.

Joy was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie “Pete” Hughes; her parents, John Herman Corley and Lucille Estelle Groves; her son, Franklin Leroy Hughes; her daughters, Pearline Kay Mapes and Gwen Annette Hughes; her brothers, Vernon Corley, John Corley, and Carol Corley; her sister, Elaora Pulliam and June Potter; and numerous other relatives.

She is survived by her son, Thomas Earl Hughes; her daughters, Linda Joy Webb and Mary Jane Dean; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; her brother, Keith Corley; and her sister, Vera Steads and her husband, Gary.

Those serving as pallbearers will be Luke Webb, Bailey Shropshire, Landon Webb, Bobby Vandervoort, Troy Vandervoort, and Gilbert Dean. Honorary pallbearers will be Dominic Shropshire, Ivan Webb, and Cannon Dean.

Funeral services for Joy will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Perkins First Baptist Church, with Pastor Roger Shaw officiating. A viewing taking place just an hour prior at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Carney Cemetery in Carney, Oklahoma.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Roger Shaw, Strode Funeral Home, and to all of the family and friends who loved Joy and shared in her life throughout her 95 years.
