Lois Pauline Britton (Hickman) Steiger, 98, passed away August 17, 2024. Visitation is 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 21, 2024 with graveside services beginning at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 22, 2024 in the Floral Haven Cemetery in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.
Lois was born May 6, 1926 to William Edgar and Eudora Britton in Moorewood, Oklahoma in Custer County. She was the eighth of nine children. After grade school she transferred to Leedey High. She played the clarinet in the band. She graduated in 1943.
She worked in Taloga, and Elk City. After graduating from Oklahoma A&M in Home Economics, she worked for Oklahoma Natural Gas Company (ONG) in Oklahoma City. After marriage, she relocated to Tulsa where she became a Home Service Director giving food demonstrations. This was the advent of television. She was part of the first cooking shows, Looking at Cooking, working part time and substituting. She did quantity cooking for St. John's Episcopal. She also, assisted the dietician in setting up the food service for Oral Roberts Village Retirement Center. She worked at Warren Petroleum Oil Company as a Secretary. She was a transcriptionist for cancer doctors. She, also, had worked as a transcriptionist for a Dermatologist.
She married Charles Edward Hickman, February 17, 1951. She had a son, Raymond Charles Hickman, who was born on March 13, 1955 and a daughter, Rebecca Lynn Hickman, August 31, 1956.
After the kids left home, Lois and Charles moved to Fort Worth for Charles to finish his career at General Dynamics in 1986. Charles died in 1990. Lois stayed in the Fort Worth area and connected with Cruise Lines to teach Brazilian Embroidery to passengers. She had a great experience. She traveled to the 7 counties of Europe, went on an Alaskan cruise, cruised the Caribbean and through the Panama Cannel. She cruised to the Mediterranean through the Canary Islands and Marocco and also on a Trans-Atlantic from Barcelona to Miami.
Lois remarried Alton Steiger (a widower) on June 28, 1996. They resided in the Oklahoma City area until Spring of 2000 when they moved to a home in Deer Run addition of Yukon. Eventually, in October of 2005 they purchased a home on Kingston Drive in Yukon. Alton died May 21, 2013. Lois was gradually losing her eye sight due to Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma. So later in 2013 she made the decision to move to Stillwater and live with Becky, her daughter.
Lois is preceded in death by both parents, her first husband, Charles Edward Hickman of Tulsa; her son Raymond Charles Hickman of Oklahoma City; Her second husband, Alton Steiger of Yukon; four sisters, Rebecca Eloise West, Ila Mae, Dorris Hogg and Lamona McCallum; and four brothers, Ezra Britton, Olen Britton, Walter Glen Britton and Wiley Britton.
She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Lynn Hickman.
