Marylyn Sue Matthews, age 87, of Stillwater, died Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at her home. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.
Marylyn was born to Richard "Dick" Chiles, Sr. and Claire Elizabeth (Burdette) Chiles on February 15, 1937 in Sulphur, Oklahoma. Mary graduated from Stillwater High School. She attended Baylor University Dental School where she graduated with the first class of dental hygienists. Mary also provided child care for numerous children, a hospice volunteer, and a dedicated life coach. Mary married her husband, Leon K. Matthews on June 2, 1972 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mary and Leon, the love of her life, traveled to many states. Leon was the manager of KSPI Radio and the pilot for the sports casters.
Mary, affectionately known as "Mimi" by the numerous children she provided care for and continued to support many after they grew older. She made costumes, baked cookies, attended school parties, and other activities. Mary loved all animals, especially cats. She enjoyed birdwatching with a bird feeder directly in front of her living room window. Mary loved to celebrate holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries. She wrapped gifts with handmade bows for family and friends alike. Mary enjoyed painting, crocheting, sewing, and needlework. Many in Mary's life have received handmade gifts.
Mary is preceded in death by her father Richard Chiles, Sr., mother Claire Chiles, husband Leon Matthews, brother Richard Chiles, and sister Barabara Hill.
Mary is survived by her brother William "Pila" Chiles; two sisters-in-laws, Linda Chiles and Benita Collier; her brother-in-law, David Hill; numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews; cousins; friends she considered as family; and all the children she cared about and took care of.
Mary was thrilled to have "enough extra" to donate to her charities. These charities included animal charities, and child supporting charities like St. Jude and Shriners Hospital. She would be thrilled for people to donate to these charities in her memory.
