Obituary

Michael Glenn Surber passed away on October 5th in Stillwater, Ok. He was born in Stillwater on Christmas Day of 1965 to Eldred Leevon Surber and Helen Jean (Negelein) Surber. He was the second of four sons. After spending his early elementary years in Stillwater, his family moved to the outskirts of Glencoe, where he completed his public schooling. From an early age, Mike displayed amazing intelligence. A voracious reader, he would often not be far from a book. He walked to the beat of his own drum and was sometimes regarded as peculiar by others, but he never let it bother him. He showed extreme compassion to other people and animals of all types, though he seemed especially partial to cats and kids. His love of wildlife led Mike to spend much of his youth hiking the outdoors and climbing. He climbed trees, but also rock formations, and despite causing fear in his mother, he also liked climbing the buildings in downtown Glencoe. Mike was diagnosed with Addison's disease during his junior high years and while attending Oklahoma State University, he was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. This uncovered an auto immune disorder that likely had led to both of the diseases. The treatments of the Addison's disease made stabilizing his blood sugars impossible, and over his adolescence and young adult years, he spent a lot of time in and out of hospitals and with a variety of physicians. His constant health issues impacted his ability to continue with his education, despite his incredible intellect.Mike never stopped learning though and he could often be found with a National Geographic, Omni, or Discover magazine, as well as endless books both fiction and non-fiction. His favorite genre had to be science fiction and loved Heinlein, Asimov, among others. He was also a huge comic book fan and amassed a large collection over the years. In addition to reading, Mike's past times included playing video games, superhero, sci-fi, as well as classic movies. Mike also had a love of music. He played a little acoustic guitar and tinkered with the banjo. Mike also developed a love for open mic nights and karaoke. He could often be found with a group of friends at George's Stables on karaoke nights. In recent years, Mike liked to theme his performances, often based on the recent passing of a beloved vocalist from the 60s, 70s, or 80s. Whether it was Neil Sedaka, Connie Francis, Brian Wilson, Robert Flack, or Ace Frehley, Mike would find a couple of songs and practice them the days leading up to karaoke night.Mike was preceded in death by both of his parents. He is survived by his three brothers, Anthony Surber and his wife Maureen of Lakeland, FL; Stephen Surber of Stillwater, and Tim Surber and his wife Nikki of Bella Vista, AR. He also had several nieces, nephews, and a huge extended family that he was very close with. The family does not plan an immediate service, but encourages those that are inclined to show support by donating money or time to a charity (wildlife preservation or medical research organization) that Mike would have endorsed.
