Naomi Elizabeth (Oursler) Von Gunten, 101, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, peacefully passed away at her home, surrounded by loving family, on March 3, 2025. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2025, at Stillwater First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.
Naomi was born on September 24, 2023, in Dill City, Oklahoma, to Rev. Clark Mortimer Oursler and Irene Florence (Duff) Oursler. Naomi's father was a Methodist pastor who served at several churches around Oklahoma while Naomi and her two brothers were growing up. Naomi attended school in Hastings, Leedey, Headrick, Elmer, Shamrock, Earlsboro, Fairland, and she ultimately graduated from high school in Warner in May 1941.
Naomi took a year of classes at Connors State College in Warner before transferring to Oklahoma State University (then called Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College) in Stillwater in the summer of 1942. Naomi graduated with a B.S. in home economics in July 1944. She then moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where she completed a one-year dietetic internship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and worked for a year as a therapeutic dietician at Faulkner Hospital.
In the summer of 1946, Naomi returned to Stillwater and began managing OSU's main cafeteria, which fed 1100 GIs. That fall, Naomi met Captain (later Colonel) Robert (Bob) Lewis Von Gunten, who stood out to Naomi because he always asked for tea instead of coffee. Bob and Naomi went on one date before Christmas 1946, and Bob went back home to Ohio and told his mom he had met the girl he was going to marry. He was right: Bob and Naomi married on May 30, 1947, at Stillwater's First Methodist Church, with Naomi's father performing the ceremony. Bob started managing the Dairy Production Plant at OSU, and they settled in Stillwater. Naomi and Bob had a loving marriage for nearly 43 years, until Bob's death on January 30, 1990. They raised four children, Lynn, Betty, and twins Barbara and Robert.
Naomi was active in the church and the community. She was a Girl Scout leader for years, then President of the Stillwater Girl Scout Council, and later President of Stillwater Girls. She was also President of the Will Rogers and Jefferson School Parent-Teacher Associations. At church, she was chair of the music committee, had leadership roles in the Women's Society of Christian Service (later called United Methodist Women and now United Women in Faith), and she was a Ministry Circle Chair. Naomi strongly believed in the importance of education and she championed her children's educational and extracurricular activities, including band, choir, orchestra, school plays, and basketball. As Naomi's children began college, she went back to work in food service for OSU, again managing multiple dormitory cafeterias.
Naomi was an avid OSU athletics fan, and she was active with OSU's Emeriti Association, Alumni Association, and Posse Club. Go Pokes! She loved to travel around the country and the world, especially with Bob and her close friend and fellow dietician, Jean Holland. She also tolerated camping and fishing trips with Bob. She enjoyed basket weaving, solving word puzzles and Sudokus, and playing (and winning) bridge and bingo. She provided excellent lap space for her mini dachshunds, Fred, Belle, and Molly. And of course, she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren over the years.
Preceding Naomi in death are her husband, Bob Von Gunten; her parents, Clark and Irene Oursler; her brothers, Robert Clark and Joseph Edward Oursler; and her son-in-law, Earl Wilt.
Naomi is survived by her four children, Lynn Wilt, Betty (Ken) Meyer, Barbara (Jeff) Moran, and Robert Von Gunten; her seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Layton, Kinnamon Clark, Wesley Meyer, Clark (Heather Hayenga) Meyer, Irene (Matthew) Upson, Brent (Ariadne) Moran, and Courtney Moran; her six great-grandchildren, Colin and Nathan Upson, Thomas Meyer Hayenga, and Lysandra, Thalia, and Artemis Moran; her close friend, Jean Holland; and numerous other friends and relatives.
