Obituary

Peter "Pete" Conrad Smith, age 70, of Stillwater, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2023 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa with family by his side after a brief battle with cancer. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of arrangements.

Pete was born January 27, 1953 in Miami, Oklahoma to Luther "Doc" Conrad Smith and Betty La Hew Ashby Smith. He attended Miami Public Schools from kindergarten to his high school graduation in 1971. Upon graduation, Pete attended Oklahoma State University where he obtained his Bachelor of Animal Science in 1977 and his Master of Animal Science in 1982. He then continued his education at the University of Arkansas where he graduated with his PhD in Higher Education in 1994. Pete began his career at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in 1978 and retired in 2009 after 31 years of teaching.

Pete had a passion for teaching. He was a pillar of the Miami and NEO A&M communities. He took pride in having the honor of teaching generations of students year after year, with every student having a special place in his heart. In 1998 Pete was among those selected to the Who's Who Among America's Teachers list and inducted into the NEO A&M Hall of Fame in 2014. In his 31 years at NEO A&M his colleagues became more than friends, they became family. In his spare time, he loved woodworking, and spending time with family whether it was watching TV, putting puzzles together, or fishing with the grandkids. He was an amazing son, brother, husband, dad, and Papa who will truly be missed by all.

Pete is preceded in death by his parents Dr. and Mrs. L.C. "Doc" and Bert Smith and Betty Smith, older brother Mike Smith and his wife of 25 years Hazel "Rinnie" Smith.

He is survived by his older sister Susie Smith Moore of Phoenix, Arizona; his brother Ron and sister in-law and Ginny Johns of Iowa; his daughters Ryi Ann Spencer of Bernice, Oklahoma, Erin Smith of Louisville, Kentucky, and Brigett Broyles and husband Luke of Stillwater, Oklahoma. He is also survived by his grandchildren Sierra Baker and husband Jarin of Perkins, and Kotah and Dalton Broyles of Stillwater, Oklahoma as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
