Robert Claflin Baker, age 94, of Stillwater, Oklahoma died Thursday, February 1, 2024 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The Rosary will begin at 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2024 at the Strode Funeral Home Chapel in Stillwater. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2024 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, also in Stillwater. Burial with military honors will follow at 2:15 p.m. in Calvary Cemetery in Tulsa. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.
Robert was born to Wendell Farmer Baker Sr. and Jessie Mildred (Claflin) Baker on February 14, 1929 in Muskogee, OK. He graduated from Will Rogers High School, Tulsa, and attended the University of Tulsa where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He married Donna Jean (Scherer) Baker on June 3, 1950 at the Holy Family Cathedral in Tulsa.
He served his country as a pilot in the United States Air Force and Oklahoma National Guard from 1953 to 1962 and earned the rank of Captain. Robert was a partner at Ark Valley Gas, Sand Springs, until he purchased Central Propane Inc. in Stillwater in 1965.
He was a long-time parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church from 1972 until his death and had served on the Finance Committee. He loved flying, and was a member of the Cardinal Club, as well as a member of and Past-President of the Perkins Lions Club, a member of and Past-President of Oklahoma Propane Gas Association, a Board Member of Oklahoma Propane Gas Administration, and served on the school board at St. Mary's Catholic School in Tulsa. He was also an avid OSU season ticket holder of football and basketball, loved flying his Cessna airplane, and spending time in Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; parents, Wendell and Jessie Baker; brother, Wendell F. Baker Jr.; sister, Armel Jean McVay; and son-in-law, Steve Tully.
Robert is survived by daughters, Elaine (Brent) Taylor and Terri Tully; and sons, Chris Baker; Steve (Cheryl) Baker; and Greg (Tammy) Baker. Twelve grandchildren, Catherine (Mark) Mims; Sarah (Taylor) Phillips; Jennifer Horn; Stephanie (Tim) Goodwin; Stuart (Kayla Davis) Daniel; Robert Daniel; Kimberly (Chris) Gearhart; Camille (Cody) Sears; Lisa Baker (Michael Gonzales); Ashley (David) Shields; Sarah (Nathan) Oglesby; and Jared (Maddie) Baker. Twenty-four great grandchildren, Hannah, Levi, Miles, Weston, Thomas, Henry, Jacob, Kaylee, Nick, Nathan, Gage, Lauren, Cooper Drake, Ella, Christian, Luke, Asher, Paxton, Madilynn, Cooper Greyson, Carter, Hudson, Graham, and Sylvie.
