Obituary

Terrell L. Hurst, III, 67, died May 11, 2025. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2025 at Sunnybrook Christian Church. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.

Terrell was an exceptional person who lived a unique life. He accomplished many goals and was able to transition to so many disciplines with ease. He was able to fit in and talk to people from all walks of life.

An only child, he was born November 3, 1957 to parents who were successful teachers. While still a toddler, his family moved to live and teach on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Kayenta, Arizona. This would be his life until he graduated from Monument Valley High School in 1975. Upon graduation he attended Southern Utah University earning his first bachelor's degree, in education.

After finding that teaching was not his passion, Terrell worked odd jobs around the Bartlesville area. While there he married in 1983 and gained a stepdaughter, Christie, who blessed him with two grandsons, Braxton and Corbin Reid. He enjoyed a career as a sales representative for Coca-Cola Distributions, in Stillwater. Although his life changed dramatically due to a near-fatal car accident in 1998, he still graduated from OSU with his second bachelor's degree, this one in business.

Terrell reconnected with his teaching career at Guthrie Jr. High where he taught Technology Education and later taught Engineering Technology at Sharon-Mutual Public Schools until 2016. It was during this time he led the school Technology Student Association students to many statewide and national robotic championships.

Terrell and Tish married in 2010 and settled into a happy life in Stillwater enjoying being parents to Eric Black and his wife Katie along with Nicole Black-James and her husband Jacob and grandparents to Emma, Amy, Allison, Jake, and Weston.

in 2019 Terrell suffered from heart failure and received the life-changing gift of a mechanical heart giving him five and a half additional years to his life. During this time, he slowed down and turned to his love of woodworking, gardening, and the culinary arts.
Terrell touched many people's lives through his teaching; being a grandparent; as well as being involved in groups such as the Christian Motorcycle Association. His love for his wife, and the quiet life at their country home made Terrell's retirement the happiest of his life.

Terrell is preceded in death by both parents Terrell and Genevieve (Weatherly) Hurst.

He is survived by his wife Leticia Carol Hurst; stepson Eric Black and his wife Katie; stepdaughters Christie Reid and Nicole James and her husband Jacob. Also grandchildren Braxton Reid, Corbin Reid, Emma Black, Amy Black, Allison Black, Jake James and Weston James.

The family would like to thank the many physicians and nurses who facilitated his care at Baptist Integris Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City.
