Cremation with funeral service
Many families still would like to have meaning and beauty of a traditional funeral service. With our cremation service you can still choose to have a final viewing, visitation or wake, and a funeral service. However instead of in-ground burial, the funeral will be followed by cremation. Depending on your wishes, the cremated remains may be either returned to your family for storage in an urn, scattered, or interred in a columbarium. This option will include the services and cremation process in the overall pricing.
Memorial service
The memorial service offers a chance for everyone to share memories, find comfort, and celebrate the life of their loved one in a meaningful way. The service often includes readings, music, and personal reflections shared by loved ones. Unlike a traditional funeral, the body is not present at the memorial, though the urn with the cremated remains may be displayed.
Graveside services
When a family has made the choice to inter a loved one after cremation they have the options to be buried in a chosen plot or placed in a special structure called a columbarium or niche. The family and friends may gather for a brief ceremony at the cemetery, where prayers or words of remembrance can be shared. The urn is then gently placed into the ground or niche, and some may choose to place flowers or tokens of remembrance at the site. This process allows loved ones to have a permanent and peaceful place to visit.
Cremation FAQs
What Information Should I Bring to the Funeral Home?
You will be asked to bring information and documents needed to prepare the death certificate and obituary for your loved one. If a service is being planned, you may also want to bring family photos that can be used in a tribute video or displayed during the service. Additional items may be requested depending on the specific arrangements you choose. Your funeral director will walk you through exactly what to bring to your arrangement meeting.
How Long After Death Can Cremation Take Place?
In Oklahoma, the State Medical Examiner must approve and issue a cremation permit before cremation can be performed.
Our team will collect the necessary details for the permit and submit the request to the Medical Examiner on your behalf. In general, approval is typically received within about two to three business days after submission.
In some cases, however, the process may take longer due to special circumstances or delays. Families who wish to have the cremated remains present for a memorial service should take this into consideration and avoid scheduling services without first coordinating with the funeral home.
If cremation is selected, is embalming required for my loved one?
The short answer is no, embalming is generally not required for cremation. However, there are some exceptions, such as when family members or friends wish to have a viewing to say their final goodbyes.
We are here to guide you through all available options based on your specific needs and circumstances.
Are individuals clothed when cremation takes place?
Generally, if there is no viewing or visitation, the deceased is cremated in the clothing or coverings they were wearing at the time of death.
We can also accommodate special requests, such as dressing the deceased in selected clothing or using a preferred blanket or wrap.
How long does the cremation process take?
Once the cremation permit is received from the Medical Examiner, cremation is typically performed the same day or the following day, depending on the crematory schedule. The ashes are usually available the day after the cremation takes place.
Is it possible for family members to be present during the cremation process?
We offer immediate family members a limited opportunity to be present when their loved one is placed into the cremation chamber. Our crematory includes a viewing window for those who wish to witness the process. This option, known as a “witness cremation,” can be arranged once the Medical Examiner’s permit has been issued.
What options do I have for my loved one’s ashes?
There are several options for what you can do with the cremated remains, including bringing them home for safekeeping. Many families find that they may not decide right away what feels right, and that’s perfectly okay—choices often become clearer with time.
Options include burial, scattering on land or at sea, dividing the ashes among family members, or creating keepsake jewelry or memorial art. Ultimately, there is no required path—only what feels meaningful to you, and you remain in full control of the decision. If you have questions about your options, we’re always here to help and provide guidance.
Are personal or meaningful items able to be placed with the deceased?
It depends on what is meant by “special,” but we make every effort to honor the wishes of the family whenever possible.
Common items families choose to include are handwritten notes, photographs, children’s drawings, or other personal mementos. We recommend speaking with your funeral director to understand the specific guidelines at our crematory regarding what can be included.
Should we hold the memorial service at the funeral home?
Memorial services are important events that deserve careful planning and attention. Because there is no opportunity to repeat the service, many families choose to rely on our experience to help ensure everything is handled smoothly and respectfully. Our team is trained to manage the details efficiently so families can focus on supporting one another.
While some families prefer to rely on their church, staff are often focused on providing care and comfort to the family rather than coordinating the many details involved in the service. Others choose to handle arrangements themselves, but find the process can become overwhelming without prior experience, especially given the number of decisions that need to be made in a short time.
We are happy to provide a detailed checklist of the responsibilities we manage when coordinating services. If the funeral home is not handling arrangements, we will work with the designated point of contact for coordination and ensure all inquiries are directed appropriately. We will also collect contact information for those managing the service and details for floral deliveries.
Can ashes be buried in a cemetery?
Yes. Ashes can be buried in the ground or placed in a columbarium niche. Please speak with your funeral director to learn more about the cremation burial options available to you.
